What is Dry AMD?

Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a condition where the macula gradually deteriorates. Dry AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50, and can affect quality of life.

Loss of central vision

AMD can cause blurriness, distortion, and blind spots in the central vision. Initial development of AMD can have no symptoms, but as it progresses it can lead to distortion, difficulty seeing in low light, and challenges with colour perception.

Challenges with daily Life

Progression of AMD causes challenges in daily life. This can include difficulty reading, driving, recognizing faces, and completing household chores. It can also include difficulties with personal hygiene tasks such as shaving and applying makeup.

Therapies

Treatment of AMD varies depending on whether the type is Wet or Dry. AMD generally develops first as Dry AMD, and can sometimes progress to Wet AMD. Some forms of Dry AMD can be candidates for MacuMira therapy, however not all forms of Dry AMD respond to MacuMira therapy. Unfortunately AMD is not a curable disease, however progression can sometimes be slowed. Therapy options should be discussed with your Doctor of Optometry.

“MacuMira offers new hope for Canadians diagnosed with dry AMD. It is the first Health Canada–licensed, noninvasive therapy proven to improve visual function in patients with dry AMD.”

How does MacuMira work?

How it works: MicroCurrent Stimulation

The specialised MacuMira headset delivers a low-level electrical current (microcurrent stimulation) across the closed eyes. In technical terms, this stimulates the Retinal Pigment Epithelium cells, which are cells of the retina that are crucial for vision. Stimulation of these cells increases energy production, and can reduce the accumulation of waste products, known as drusen, which is associated with AMD.

What to expect during your sessions

During your session, the technician will have you reclined in an exam chair. The technician will apply gel to the eye area and place the MacuMira headset around your eyes. This headset is what will deliver the microcurrent stimulation.

Each session is approximately 60 minutes, including time for the use of the headset, and any additional required imaging or scans.

Therapy timeline

MacuMira therapy begins with a preliminary meeting with your Doctor of Optometry, to determine candidacy. The therapy then involves two phases: the loading phase and the maintenance phase.

The loading phase for MacuMira involves 4 distinct sessions over the course of 10 days. These sessions must take place at least a day apart. Most of the improvement in vision takes place during this initial phase. The maintenance phase consists of one follow-up session every 2.5-3 months, to maintain the effects of the therapy.

Benefits of MacuMira therapy

MacuMira therapy aims to give patients improved sight, visual acuity, and increased contrast. The majority of improvements occur during the loading phase of treatment, which takes place during the first 10 days. The maintenance phase of the therapy helps to conserve improvements obtained during the loading phase.

MacuMira therapy does not require a physician referral; patients are welcome to call to book a consultation with one of our Doctors of Optometry. This consultation may take the form of an in-person or a telemedicine appointment to discuss candidacy for MacuMira therapy. Candidacy will be discussed during this consultation, as not all forms of Dry AMD will respond to MacuMira therapy.
