MacuMira

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that affects the retina, causing central vision loss. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults and is due to damage to the macula. As AMD progresses, patients have difficulty with reading, driving, and distinguishing details.
MacuMira
MacuMira is the first clinically proven and regulatory approved therapy for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). MacuMira is a safe and non-invasive eyelid surface neurostimulation that is administered in approved eye care clinics by an ophthalmic technician. A targeted microcurrent is delivered across the closed eyelids to stimulate the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) cells. Stimulation of the RPE cells helps improve cellular functioning, waste clearance.
The intended outcome of MacuMira treatment is to improve the quality of life for patients with Dry AMD. Regaining any vision can allow patients the ability to resume or restore activities that were made difficult by the symptoms of AMD. Improvements that can occur with treatment include increased contrast in vision and increased brightness. This can allow patients to have an easier time with tasks such as reading or driving. Some patients experience more dramatic improvements in vision, while others experience more subtle improvements. Effects of the treatment vary patient-to-patient.

Treatment Course
MacuMira therapy is delivered in two phases. The first phase is a loading phase, which delivers the maximum benefit and is the period of time when patients see the most improvement in vision. Phase one consists of four sessions within 10 days. The second phase is the maintenance treatments. The maintenance treatments consist of one treatment every 2 – 3 months. The purpose of the maintenance treatments are to maintain the improvements achieved during the loading phase. Each MacuMira session is approximately one hour in length. The headset is worn and the currents are delivered for exactly 32 minutes of that hour appointment.
